REVEALED: Why CMI, CID Launched New Kaweesi Murder Probe

The Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) have started fresh investigations into the assassination of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

The process includes the reopening of the file, reassessing the scene of the crime and tracing any possible witnesses to the shooting that occurred more than 15 months ago. Kaweesi was gunned down together with his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver Godfrey Wambewo on March 17, 2017, a few meters from his home in Kulambiro, a suburb of Kampala.

Local reports add that all the Scene Of Crime Officers (SOCOs) who worked on the scene of the assassination on the morning of March 17, 2017, have been questioned and recorded statements as part of the fresh investigation.

A source who preferred anonymity told URN that all the Scene of Crime Officers were questioned from CMI headquarters in Mbuya.

“The Director CID Grace Akullo is heading the fresh investigations but we are working together with CMI. We got the Scene of Crime report but we also had to question the officers. If you remember well, no one in CID was involved in the investigations at first so basically, we all know nothing about Kaweesi’s murder,” the source privy to the ongoing investigation said.

The fresh investigation is being carried out on orders of President Museveni who from the beginning expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the initial investigation.

The Internal Security Organisation (ISO) at the beginning of the year prepared an intelligence report into the murder of Kaweesi in which senior police officers including the then IGP Kayihura, former Flying Squad Commandant Herbert Muhangi, Nixon Agasirwe, Jonathan Baroza and many others are implicated.

The president has since handed the report over to a team of investigators and intelligence personnel for counterintelligence, perusal and verification. The team is to report back to the president after perusing through and verifying the information therein.

The police spokesperson Emilian Kayima declined to comment on the investigations saying, “I will comment on the matter at an appropriate time.”

The initial investigation into Kaweesi’s murder which was led by former Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura saw 47 suspects arrested, 23 of whom were charged in court on charges of Murder, robbery and terrorism.
