Pro-Age Limit MPs Vow To Paralyze Parliament

A coalition of legislators opposed to the proposed lifting of the presidential age limit has vowed to paralyze business at parliament should police arrest any of them.

Fourteen legislators drawn from the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party and opposition told journalists at parliament on Monday afternoon that they have learnt of a plot by police to arrest them in an attempt to stop them from appearing at the house on Tuesday.

The legislators included among others Medard Lubega Sseggona, Monica Amoding, Robert Kyagulanyi, Allan Ssewanyana, MP Theodore Ssekikubo, Muhammad Nsereko, Gerald Karuhanga and Felix Okot Ogong.
It is highly anticipated that the speaker will allow the Igara West MP, Raphael Magyezi to table his motion on Tuesday seeking leave of parliament to draft and present a private member’s seeking the scrapping of the presidential age limit, which caps the president’s age at 75 years.

Medard Lubega Ssegona, the Busiro East MP, said there will be no business in the house should police arrest any of them.

He accused police of turning into a partisan force to persecute those opposed to the proposed amendment. Some of the MPs opposed to the proposed scrapping of the presidential age limit including Theodore Ssekikubo, Muhammad Nsereko and Allan Ssewanyana were last week summoned to record police statements for allegedly inciting violence.
