Parliament’s Committee Rejects Govt Move To Hike Fees For Replacing Lost National ID

Parliament’s Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs says that it has rejected the government’s proposal to hike fees for replacing lost national identity cards.

This has been revealed by the chairperson of the committee, Rose Mary Nyakikongoro after the Kabale municipality MP Nicholas Kamara while presenting a matter of national importance questioned the proposal to increase the fees for replacement of national ID or change of particulars on the national ID in these hard economic times.

Kamala informed Parliament that NIRA during the mass enrollment exercise between June 2023 to August 2024 plans to introduce an express fee for IDs for both first timers and those who want to renew their IDs.

He says that they also want to increase the fees for replacement or change of particulars from 50,000 shillings to 200,000 shillings which he says it too high in these tough economic times.

The state minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. David Muhoozi  informed MPs that this was not a new idea as it has already been presented to Parliament and its catered for in the Registration of Persons Act but noted that they are willing to review it and reach a position with Parliament.

The Speaker, Anita Among demanded to know if the prices could not be reduced as this is the concern of the Member of Parliament. Gen. Muhoozi pledged to consult and report back.

Nyakikongoro informed Parliament that they have been investigating the matter and that the Committee has already rejected the proposal to increase fees for replacement of National IDs.

Among asked MPs to wait for the report of the committee for the matter to be discussed.
