Uganda earns millions of dollars from coffee exports

A new report has put Uganda at number eight among world’s 50 best coffee producing countries.

World Population Review report of 2023 shows that Brazil remains a dominant coffee producer at number one followed by Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Honduras, India and Uganda  (in that order). Mexico is ranked ninth followed by Guatemala, Peru Nicaragua and China. According to the report, neighboring Kenya is ranked number 16 while Rwanda is ranked number 30.

The report puts Brazil’s production values (in pounds) at 5,714,381,000 pounds compared to  Vietnam’s 3,637,627,000 pounds, Colombia (1,785,744,000 pounds), Indonesia (1,455,050,000 pounds), Ethiopia (846,575,000 pounds), Honduras (767,208,000 pounds), India (767,208,000 pounds), Uganda (634,931,000 pounds) and Mexico (515,881,000 pounds).

The same report recognizes the ten countries that are reported as having the top highest rates of coffee production. These are Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Uganda, Mexico and Guatemala.

A 2022 report by Eleven Coffees put Uganda at number ten (10) with 255,000 metric tons. According to Eleven Coffees, Brazil was the best coffee producing country with 3, 558, 000 metric tons.

The report put Ethiopia at number five with 441, 000 metric tons.

Eleven Coffees, however, recognized that the bulk of coffee production is Robusta at 82%, and Arabica accounts for the rest at 18%, and that Uganda’s production provides 2.4% of the total output of global coffee.

Uganda currently produces about 8 million bags of coffee, and it is on the road to producing 20 million bags by 2030. If this is achieved, Uganda could become one of the top three coffee producing countries globally.
