Museveni Reveals ‘Bitter Alcohol’ Experience

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has revealed why he is a teetotaller, saying he once tried to drink beer and whiskey and found both alcoholic drinks bitter and disgusting.

“I had never tasted alcohol before then one of my friends convinced me to. I tried beer; it’s so bitter like omululuza (bitter leaf). I asked why they were drinking it, he told me ‘you’ll know the sweetness later.’ I tried Johnnie Walker [whisky] and it was like fire”

Mr Museveni made the comments on Tuesday at a pass-out event for prison service cadets in the capital, Kampala:
