The State Minister for ICT, Aidah Erios Nantaba should make use of the police force if she’s facing any attacks instead of relying on media, the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, Obiga Kania has advised.
“What I know is that Nantaba has been talking to CIID, our position as Ministers and Police is very clear you were being looked for to be assassinated you seem to have good evidence on that matter, go and give it to the Police so that we resolve this matter. Talking to the Ministers, because we aren’t investigating officers, it would be futile,” said Obiga.
Obiga was responding to remarks by Nantaba over the weekend while addressing a congregation at Bukolooto Seventh Day Adventists Church in Kayunga Town where she said that the gunmen killing notable Ugandans are not agents of Allied Democratic Front (ADF) rebel group as police previously said, but assassins from state security organs.
Obiga made the remarks today while addressing journalists at Office of the Prime Minister in commemoration of NRM Manifesto week where he was updating the nation on the achievements of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Nantaba recently divulged into her accusations saying that the masterminds of assassinations are highly-placed government and security officials who are untouchables.
Nantaba was recently in the limelight after Police shot dead Ronald Ssebulime, a resident of Wakiso District in cold blood, who was reportedly on his way to visit his daughters at St. Andrew’s SS Kabimbiri in Kayunga District.
After the Minister raised concerns over a man that was trailing her on a motorcycle, thinking she was the target of hit men that had killed Former State Attorney Joan Kagezi, former Police Chief Felix Kaweesi, former Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga and former Buyende DPC Mohammed Kirumira who were allegedly gunned down by unknown individuals riding on motorcycles.
“As Ugandans, we have more than 10,000 questions on who is choosing which Ugandan to kill like chicken. I was going to be the next, but God saved me,” Nantaba said.
In his update about the Minister’s performance, Minister Obiga expressed concerns on the increasing number of people who are committing crimes.
He said that although Uganda’s population is growing at the rate of 3.5 percent per year the number of people in prisons is increasing at the rate of 10 percent and called for actions to avert this trend.
Obiga however says that due to different programs in prisons they have been able to reduce on the number of people who re-committ crimes after completing their sentences from 20 percent to 16 percent.
The Minister also admitted that in terms of keeping security and protecting Ugandans, the Ministry is still faced with the challenge of unresolved border demarcations which have hampered efforts to fight crime and promised that the ongoing finger printing of 400,000 guns in the country and CCTV cameras will help in fulfilling this.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 24 million Ugandans have been able to get NINS out of which 18m are of voting age and says that in future government agencies will be able to utilize this data.
