Michael Atingi-Ego Named As Bank Of Uganda Governor, Economist Nuwagaba As His Deputy

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr Michael Atingi-Ego as the substantive Governor of Bank of Uganda. Faruk Kirunda, Deputy Press Secretary, Office of the President confirmed the appointment.

He revealed that the President also appointed Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, a former economics lecturer at Makerere University as BoU’s deputy Governor.

“I wish to confirm that H.E the President @KagutaMuseveni, as the Appointing Authority, has named Mr. Michael Atingi-Ego, former Deputy Governor, Bank Of Uganda (B.O.U) as the new Governor and Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba as the Deputy Governor,” Kirunda said in a tweet.

Atingi-Ego previously worked for the central bank in a senior position, then left and returned in 2020 as deputy governor.

He has been the acting head of the bank since the death of long-serving former governor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile in 2022.

Atingi-Ego was among the front-runners to substantively replace the late Mutebile as BoU Governor. This is after he served excellently well as the deputy governor, with inflation contained and macro-economic stability attained for the last three years.  He is a seasoned economic policy technocrat who has served in several capacities at various institutions. He started his career at BoU rising through the ranks.
