Installation Of Digital Number Plates On Private Vehicles For November

The Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), is ready to commence installation of digitalized number plates on private vehicles.

ITMS is a Russian company procured by government to install number plates. The company started with government public vehicles and motorcycles.

Fixing the plates on private vehicles is expected to start in November.

ITMS officials disclosed that they have in stock all what it takes to produce both government and public plates and are ready to install them when enrollment starts.

“We have available stock to cover all necessary future productions,” noted Nikita Novoselov the production manager said.

Enrollment of these new vehicle and motorcycle plates, is expected to commence before the end this year, and owners will be required to pay 714,000 Shillngs for new plates while exchanging for existing plates will cost 50,000 Shillngs for motorcycle and 150,000 Shillngs for vehicles.

Galina Svalova the head of communications ITMS said that they are to set up seven installation centers in Kampala and later many more across the country.

“Currently, we have reached an agreement with eight car bonds in Kampala to work as installation centers, Furthermore, we will have two major registration and installation centers at Malaba and Mutukula border points, we are moving step by step to make this easier as the deadline nears,” Svalova noted.

According to the production team, the company has a production capacity of 5,000 plates a day and this can be increased as demand arises. Estimates show that Uganda has a total of over 2.3 million vehicles.

The digital number plates initiative, though looked at as a revolutionary traffic and security move by government, has faced resistance from Ugandans, with concerns stemming from the high price to pay for the plates, to being seen as an infringement onto a right to privacy.
