Gov’t Urges Ugandans To Use Necessities Sparingly As Commodity Prices Continue To Skyrocket

Soap prices have more than doubled

Uganda’s Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has asked Ugandans to use the commodities at home sparingly, saying the recent trend of the skyrocketing prices is a global trend that Government has no control over.

She made the remarks during a media interview after today’s plenary sitting after Parliament failed to receive statement on the skyrocketing commodity prices that had been lined up on the order paper.

“The prices of commodities is a global phenomenon; we have taken trouble to find out what is happening in the neighbouring countries and the prices are going up. Why? Because all countries opened at the same time, so the factories are overwhelmed by demand in all countries across the globe because some of these raw materials don’t come from here. We are asking Ugandans to be calm and use the items sparingly but this is temporary,” said Nabbanja.

The Premier blamed the high prices on manufacturers hounding prices of the commodities by refusing to release goods onto the market.

Prices of most household items such as soap and  cooking oil have more than doubled. A bar of White Star soap now go for as high as Shs10,000 in some areas while a litre of cooking oil is being sold at bewteen Shs8,000 and Shs10,000.
