Government Flags Off Researchers To Count All Education Institutions

In a bid to facilitate planning and quality service delivery, the Ministry of Education and sport together with Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) have flagged a team of researchers that will carry out the exercise of counting all education institutions in Uganda for a period from 11th March to April 30th 2019.

While flagging off the team at UBOS headquarters on Monday, The Ministry of State for Education, Hon. Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo said the list will improve the service delivery and better planning saying for a long time there has been ambiguous statistics on the number of schools, teachers, and materials available which he says was affecting the economy.

“The education master list will help us to review legal and policy framework as well as development of education management information systems which are all aimed at realization of reliable and timely data for education and sports sector,” she said.


Muyingo added that regular collection of quality and timely statistics and information is pivotal to decision making, planning, budgeting, policy analysis, resource allocation and reporting for the education and sports sector and that the numerous data collection efforts, the information requirements for the sector are yet to be fully satisfied. He applauded the support for the exercise from government, DFID, Global Partnership, which he said will cost over Ushs. 26 Billion.

The acting UBOS Executive Director, Mr Vitus Kato Mulindwa, said statistics acts a mirror of what is happening in society which makes different actors to undertake inventions in alleviating plight of people.

“I am delighted that several programmes and interventions have been executed as a result of our previous surveys and censuses among them construction of more schools to reduce on distant learning,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary for Ministry of education and sport Alex Kakooza sais that the ministry with Ministry of ICT will develop a one stop centre Information Management system containing all information about the education sector. He adds that the ministry during the counting exercise will use a data frame which will include school in all levels, teaches, materials among other information particulars.

“We are going to have a broader structure with a data frame including schools location, teachers, classes, materials to help us plan with statistics” he said.
