COVID-19 Crisis: Ethiopian Poultry Farmers ‘Destroy’ Over 600,000 Chicks

Over 600,000 chicks have been destroyed in Ethiopia

More than 600,000 chicks have been destroyed by poultry farmers in Ethiopia because of a loss of demand from hotels whose business has been restricted as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Reuters news agency reports.

It quotes leading chicken supplier EthioChicken as saying that in the capital, Addis Ababa, alone, nearly 650,000 chicks were killed in May and June. Many more could have been killed prematurely countrywide.

“We also had to actually pull some eggs from our hatchery, so that we could destroy them as eggs instead of chicks,” EthioChicken head of marketing Fseha Tesfu told Reuters.

The problems in the poultry sector is a reflection of the economic impact measures to control coronavirus are having.
