The Prime Minister has promised to procure motorized engine boats for the people of Amolatar District who have been cut off by floods.
Robinah Nabbanja was on Saturday in Amolatar to assess the magnitude of damage caused by floods and also follow up on the relief food distribution to the flood victims.
Flash floods caused by the rising water levels of Lake Kyoga and Kwania have continued to affect the district, displacing over 4,000 families. The floods have submerged several kilometres of the district’s land and roads, disconnecting several communities from accessing social services.
Unlike last year where only six out of 16 sub-counties in the district were affected, this year the entire district is experiencing floods with most crop gardens that had survived the drought getting submerged in the water alongside many households.
Nabbanja was unable to visit Ocomboli Parish in Namasale Sub County because the road is flooded and the only canoe on that route was on the other side.
She said that her office has a budget to purchase boats for victims in flood-prone areas.
Peter Okori, a resident of Acii sub-county says that the boats will enable the residents to access social services. He says that currently there are struggling to access health facilities since all the roads have been destroyed.
Nabbanja also directed the Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA and the District engineers to work on the road in Alemere connecting to Alemere Health Centre III.
She also promised food, hand hoes and seedlings to the flood victims who are in camps.
Since last year, the Amolatar district has been experiencing several challenges caused by floods as a result of the rising water levels of Lake Kyoga.
The floods have destroyed 60% of the District’s road networks, submerged schools and health facilities.
