Uganda Peoples’ Congress (UPC) has attacked Uganda’s leading Opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC, noting that it is fermenting divisions and intrigue among Ugandans against their leaders for selfish interests.
The remarks were made by Michael Osinde, the UPC Spokesperson during the party’s weekly press briefing held on Wednesday.
He was responding to a question on the isolation campaign by FDC of the 317 MPs that voted for the Age Limit Bill.
It should be noted that FDC President, Patrick Amuriat Oboi launched the isolation campaign on Monday.
“These MPs should be isolated for touching our constitution, risking the lives of many Ugandans; if they have businesses the public should not buy from them,” Amuriat said.
However, Osinde said such a campaign is for opportunists with selfish motives.
Osinde said: “Even when you go to the ground now, you will find out that the population is already charged up against their legislators which have created tension. Now if there is already tension, what new thing are you bringing on board apart from just being opportunistic with selfish motives?”
He added: “If you are a leader and you already see tension prevailing in the country, do you again call for more tension as if you want to see another Luweero war that claimed many innocent lives? Do you now want people to kill each other because of the decision that was taken in Parliament? The issue should be how we get the country out of the mess that we are in and not again fueling anger.”
Osinde noted that dialogue is the most important thing needed now in order to restore peace within the country.
“UPC totally disagrees with that position; we don’t want another person to die with a mistake that can be corrected by dialogue, referendum and by setting up a constitution review commission,” he said.
