Entebbe International Airport recorded a total of 196, 211 International passengers in January 2024, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has said.

Vianney M. Luggya, the UCAA Spokesman, says this comprised 99,216 and 96, 995 arriving and departing passengers respectively.

“This reflects an average of 6, 329 passengers per day, the second highest figure to be recorded in a single month after 6, 418 passengers recorded per day in December 2023,” Luggya says.

He attributes the rise in January 2024 passenger traffic to partly Uganda’s hosting of  Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group 77 (G77) plus the China Summits in January 2024.

The Airport facilitated a total of 1,900 delegates and this certainly contributed to the traffic. In relation to Cargo, Luggya says Entebbe International Airport recorded 1,579 metric tons of imports and 3,604 metric tons of exports in January 2024.

In September 2023, Uganda’s aviation industry demonstrated substantial improvement, surpassing global and regional averages following a significant safety audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Uganda received a commendable 72.17 percent in the assessment audit, highlighting the country’s commitment to aviation safety.

In 2023, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that African airlines moved 960 thousand tons of freight, representing 96.7 percent of the 2019 figures.

As per IATA’s report, global airlines carried 3.4 billion passengers in 2022 compared to 2.2 billion in 2021. African airlines carried 67 million passengers in 2022, reflecting a 55.8 percent growth but accounting for only 2 percent of global traffic.
