‘Girls Not Brides’ Boss Dies In Car Accident With Son

Women activists and civil society organisations in the country are mourning the death of the Girls Not Brides coordinator, Phiona Kabahubya who passed away in a fatal car accident.

According to a message posted on the JOY FOR CHILDREN – UGANDA, Facebook page, Phiona breathed her last on Sunday morning.

“It’s with deep sorrow that we announce the death of our amazing, hardworking, and inspiring colleague. Phiona Kabahubya has been our programmes coordinator and Girls not Brides coordinator in Uganda.

She passed on today with her son in a fatal accident. We pray for her soul and that of her son Ithiel Kevan Kaganzi. May their souls rest in peace,” the message reads.

Girls Not Brides is a global partnership of 800 civil society organisations committed to ending child marriage and enabling girls to fulfil their potential.

It’s members bring child marriage to global attention, build an understanding of what it will take to end child marriage and call for the laws, policies and programmes that will make a difference in the lives of millions of girls.

There has been an outpouring of emotion on social media with many of the fallen Phiona’s friends in disbelief that she is no more.

Phiona, her husband and son were traveling from Jinja back to Kampala when the accident happened.

Her husband Chris Kaganzi is currently at Nakasero Hospital Kampala.
