Unknown People Destroy School Latrine Under IGG Investigations

IGG, Beti Kamya.

Unidentified people have demolished a poorly built pit latrine at Kabei primary school in Bukwo district, days after officers from the Inspectorate of Government-IG inspected it. On Monday, a team from the IG headquarters in Kampala visited the school and took pictures of the Shillings 28million sinking pit latrine that was constructed in 2019.

However, residents of Kabei village woke up on Friday only to find unknown people had demolished the pit latrine. Joseph Chemusto, a parent said the pit latrine was under investigation by the Inspectorate of government.

“We were with IGG at this school and they saw a shodly done pitlane at the cost of Shillings 28m. They took pictures and promised to come back to take action against those who constructed the latrine but this morning we found out that the pit latrine has been demolished during night hours,” he said.

Andrew Muneria Nyayo, the School Management Committee Chairperson, says that people who destroyed the latrine are from Bukwo district local government. He said that he stopped the same team from destroying the latrine when the primary seven pupils were writing their examinations on Wednesday.

“They had come at first to demolish the latrine when children were sitting their PLE but I blocked them and I demanded the letter authorizing them to demolish the latrine but they went back. On Friday night, they came and demolished the latrine when people were asleep,” he said.

Nyayo said the latrine was constructed by Koretek General agencies limited. Moses Chemonges, one of the anticorruption monitors in Bukwo, said the demolition of the pit latrine was meant to destroy the evidence of shoddy work.
