The stray Hippo was killed on Monday after destroying two latrines and a kitchen in Saruti Cell
Residents of Saruti B in Kasese Municipality have killed one of the stray hippopotamuses that have been disturbing the area.
The hippos escaped from the Queen Elizabeth national park in July last year and inhabited the stagnant water in Kanyangeya cell adjacent to River Nyamwaba.
This is the second river hippo to be killed by locals in a space of two months in the municipality.
Residents complain that the wild animals are destroying their properties and gardens.
Sunday Saliveri told reporters that the hippo raided their area at around 5.00am on Monday and destroyed two toilets and one kitchen.
He said residents acted in retaliation following many attacks from the wild animals.
Other residents claimed their appeals for compensation whenever their properties are destroyed have not been attended to by Uganda wild life Authority -UWA.
Mbambu Janet Chairperson LC I Saruti B says the hippos have destroyed many people’s gardens and property without the affected persons being compensated.
The Community Conservation Warden Rwenzori Mountain national park, Alice Natukunda, said they acted upon receiving a phone call from one of the locals but it was too late.
Natukunda however appealed to the communities adjacent the park to always inform the authorities when stray animals invade their communities other than taking such mob actions.
The UWA team picked up the carcass for disposal.
Wildlife attacks on communities neighbouring the park have been rampant.
In August last year, a hippo attacked Charles Mugisa and devoured his legs as he was getting back from his brickmaking routine. Residents have often retaliated by killing the species.
