Uganda’s Agriculture Minister, Frank Tumwebaz
A Ugandan minister has raised concerns about “trade restrictions” imposed by neighbouring Kenya.
A tweet by Uganda’s Agriculture Minister, Frank Tumwebaze, addressed to his Kenyan counterpart, Peter Munya, says Uganda is “not happy” with restrictions on sugar exports:
He says this casts doubt on the idea of the East African Community – a regional bloc which aims to integrate economies.
The Kenyan minister has not responded.
Kenya last week issued guidelines reducing the earlier agreed quota of Uganda sugar imports that it would allow into the country.
Kenya has been in a row with Uganda over the imports following concerns by local producers that the sugar could be originating from other countries.
