EC: Private Tally Centres Not Provided For Under The Law

The Electoral Commission has revealed that Private Tally Centres are not provided for under the law.

Addressing the press ahead of tomorrow’s Presidential and Parliamentary  elections at the National Tally Centre at Kyambogo University, Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the Electoral Commission Chairperson said the law provides that the only entity mandated to announce election results is the Electoral Commission.

He said Presidential results are announced  at the National Tally Centre while Parliamentary and Local Government at district tally centre.

Byabakama’s remarks follow stance by ruling NRM and opposition political parties including FDC, NUP and DP  to set up private tallying centres.

“The Electoral Commission is mandated by law to declare presidential election results within 48 hours after closure of polling day. Polling will take place on Thursday 14th January 2021. The exercise will begin at 7:00am and close at 4:00pm,” Byabakama said.

The Electoral Commission further informs the general public that voting can only go beyond the closing time of 4:00pm if a registered voter is already in the queue before 4:00pm hour clocks.

“All registered voters that will be in the queue by 4:00pm will be allowed to cast their ballots,” EC said.

Byabakama added that the Electoral Commission has issued Voter Location Slips to enable voters locate their polling stations on polling day.

“The Voter Location Slip bears a barcode that will be read by the Biometric Voter Verification machine deployed at all polling stations across the country,” he said.
