How Lockdown Helped Presidential Hopeful Gen Tumukunde Get Court Bail

Kampala High Court on Monday finally granted bail to Retired Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde (pictured) who has been in prison on treason charges for close to two months.

Judge Wilson Kwesiga ruled that he was satisfied with Tumukunde’s application seeking a review of his bail terms; that given the nature of his case, he couldn’t get Military officers to bail him out due to COVID-19 lockdown and subsequently substituted them with his wife Stellah Tumukunde, Brother -in-law Hannington Karuhanga and family friend Matthew Rukikaire as substantial sureties.

The Judge ordered both Tumukunde and his relatives to sign a non-cash bond of Shs50m, deposit his passport with court and ensure that he reports to the lower court at City Hall on May20, 2020 which should also consider his bail on charges of unlawful possession of firearms- in the same terms.

Tumukunde was on March18, 2020 charged before the City Hall court with Treason and unlawful possession of firearms, and was remanded to Luzira prison.

On March03, 2020, Tumukunde declared his Presidential ambition officially and vowed to stand against President Museveni in the 2021.
