In a twist of events, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has halted the ban on importation of used clothes and shoes.
Earlier this week, UNBS announced ban on the above category of imports in a move aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
However, in a statement dated April21, 2020, UNBS Executive Director, Ben Manyindo (pictured) says: “The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is halting the implementation of the suspension of importation and clearance of used garments and footwear, until further notice.”

Manyindo noted that the administrative measure though supported by the existing national standards has generated a lot of feedback from social media thus raising anxiety and debate in the public domain.
“We have realized that the debate may derail the focus of other existing measures put by Government in curbing the spread of COVID-19,” Manyindo said.
He added: “UNBS has therefore decided to stay the administrative measures of importation and clearance of used garments and used footwear mentioned in the earlier communication until further notice.”
