Gov’t: Masaka, Mbale Cities To Become Operational In July 2020

Cabinet on Monday approved the Operationalization of Mbale and Masaka Cities in Financial Year 2020/2021.

Addressing the press at Uganda Media Centre today about Monday’s Cabinet Resolutions, Jenipher Namuyangu (pictured), the State Minister for Local Government said stakeholders from Mbale and Masaka proposed Cities expressed readiness for the two cities to become operational with effect from July 2020.

“The Ministry found the requests acceptable and presentable to Cabinet a memorandum for the revision of the phasing as follows; First 7 cities including Arua, Mbarara, Gulu, Fort Portal, Jinja, Mbale and Masaka. Each of the cities will comprise of two City Divisions that will be equivalent to Municipalities for easy administration and coordination,” Namuyangu said.

She added: “Uganda’s Vision 2040 envisages an urbanized Uganda, an ambitious plan that seeks to elevate it to Middle income status. There’s no doubt that the future of Uganda’s growth will continue to lie in new cities which will be Strategic and Regional.”

The Minister also said there are no plans yet for a new capital City.

“No plan to build a new capital city for Uganda…maybe in future these many new cities will grow and one could be designated as a new capital city,” the Minister revealed.
