From next year, people will no longer be able to take single-use plastic products such as bags, cutlery and plates into its national parks, beaches and forests.
Announcing the ban at a conference in Canada, President Uhuru Kenyatta said “Kenya is a trailblazing nation with regards to environmental protection”.
State House Kenya twitted: “President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a ban on the use of single-use plastics in protected areas in the country. The ban announced on #WorldEnvironmentDay covers national parks, forests and beaches, and will become effective on 5th June 2020.”
Two years ago, the country banned the use and manufacture of plastic bags and packing materials. Customers now bring their own bags or baskets to the shops and markets, or they are sold a cloth bag.
Last Saturday, Tanzania became the latest African country to ban plastic bags.
On Monday evening, President John Magufuli made a surprise visit to a fish market sporting a wicker basket in a move to support the ban.
