The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has instructed all telecommunication providers to validate and update existing subscriber SIM registration information to insure full compliance with SIM card registration guidelines.
The leading telecom players in Uganda are MTN, Airtel, Africell and Uganda telecom.
In a statement dated April10, 2019, UCC said audit findings indicated that there was noncompliance with subscriber SIM card registration.
UCC has since held meetings with telecom operators on how to handle different categories of data that needs updating.
For example, a meeting held with telecom operators and UCC bosses on April 2, 2019 “agreed that there was an immediate need for updating and aligning SIM Card registration information in line with industry guidelines to improve information integrity and prove a secure communications ecosystem.”
UCC insists that this is NOT a NEW registration process but rather a validation and updating of existing information.
“Therefore, not every registered simcard holder will be affected. Different service providers will individually contact those affected, either by SMS, phone call or IVR messages,” UCC stated.
