75% Of Ugandan Start-Ups Don’t See Their First Birthdays – Experts

Uketa instructors Rachael Nalumu, Shakib Nsubuga and Joel Muhumuza

An expert in the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) has revealed that nearly 75% of start-ups do not celebrate their first birthdays.

Shakib Nsubuga, Jumia’s Expansion Manager, was last evening speaking at the launch of Uketa, an innovative online course platform designed professionals. Nsubuga is one of the instructors putting up content on the platform.

Nsubuga attributes the failure rate to the failure by employers to understand their employees.

“There is a limit to what one can do. Use their skill sets. Have a tool kit and skills to get the best out of your people,” Nsubuga who is an expert in people management says.

Stanbic Flyhub Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Joel Muhumuza, who is one of the instructors says that with experience, Ugandan businesses lack financing. Having managed a fund worth thousands of dollars, he says that grants were going to non-indigenous companies.

“Most businesses that tap on grants were coming from U.S and U.K,” he said, “They new how to position for business, how to write proposals and pitch for business.”

Using Uketa platform, Muhumuza is creating content that gets an entrepreneur to position where they can get financial support.

“The courses focus on practically and real-world applications. The platform offers hands-on, industry relevant assignments and projects that allow learners to apply their knowledge and skills in practical scenarios. This approach enables professionals to immediately apply what they have learned in their work environment, making the learning experience highly practical and valuable,” Muhumuza said.

Uketa Founder, Dr. Natalie Bitature says the platform is tailored to meet the unique needs of professionals across various industries including businesses, technology, finance, marketing and leadership among others.

The platform, she said, offers a wide range of courses ranging from beginner to advanced levels to cater to learners with different skills levels and backgrounds. The courses are curated by industry experts and thought leaders, ensuring that learners received the most up-to-date and relevant content.

“We are excited to launch Uketa and provide professionals with a cutting-edge platform to enhance their skills and stay ahead in their careers. Every effort was made in designing the platform to ensure we deliver high-quality, practical, and relevant learning experiences that can empower professionals to achieve their career goals and excel in their respective industries,” Dr. Bitature said.
