Works Ministry Takes Over Registration Of Vehicles From URA

The registration of vehicles is set to shift from Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to Ministry of Works and Transport, Aggrey Bagiire, the State Minister of Works has revealed.

He said URA will concentrate on their mandate of collecting revenue.

The Minister made the remarks today while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Physical Infrastructure to present the 2019/2020 Ministerial Policy Statement for the Works sector.

He however said that the plans have been hampered by limited funds to carry out exercise.

He informed the Committee that they need Shs47bn to transfer the registration activity from URA but the Treasury has only availed them Shs5bn in the 2019/20 budget.

The Ministry had hoped for Shs25bn as a start up funds.

Bagiire says that they have realized URA has been concentrating a lot of their work of revenue collection, noting that other areas like safety have been neglected.

“We took over responsibility of motor vehicle registration; we thought URA should concentrate on revenue collection and we have been in negotiations and we take over the registration of vehicles. If we are going to do that, we need budget of Shs47bn and we agreed we start with 25bn every financial year, but they have only given us Shs5bn,” he said.
