Uganda’s Winnie Byanyima was on Thursday sworn-in as UNAIDS new Executive Director.
She was sworn in by the UN Secretary General, Antonnio Guterres.
Winnie previously served as Oxfarm International ED before being appointed UNAIDS boss.
“I am greatly honoured by the @UN SG & I’m excited 2 lead @UNAIDS as the world enters the #DecadeofAction to achieve the #SDGs by 2030. We will challenge inequalities in health, & fight 2 remove barriers in the way of prevention, treatment & care 4 women girls & key populations,” Winnie tweeted after her confirmation on Thursday.
Guterres appointed Ms Byanyima as the UNAIDS Executive Director and United Nations Under-Secretary-General in August following a comprehensive selection process that involved a search committee constituted by members of the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board. The UNAIDS Committee of Cosponsoring Organizations made the final recommendation on the appointment to the Secretary-General.
