The US Embassy in Kampala has distanced itself from reports that it detained Uganda government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo.
In a statement on Twitter, the US Mission in Uganda says the rumors are ‘fake news.’
“A false news story is circulating about Ofwono Opondo being detained at the U.S. embassy. Mr. Opondo did not appear at the embassy, nor was he arrested or detained on or near the embassy compound. This story is completely false, & Mr. Opondo has confirmed this as well on Twitter,” the tweet says.
It is not clear where the rumor originated, however, a screenshot has been circulating online indicating that Opondo had been detained at the embassy.
Ofwono tweeted, ” Very #FakeNews. I have not been to the @USAmbUganda in a very very long time and have no need to travel to the US. Am very comfortable in Uganda and more in #Mulanda.”
