UPDF Trashes Kenya Deployment Reports

Uganda’s army has rubbished reports that it deployed her troops in neighbouring Kenya to following fears of post election violence.

Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Brigadier Richard Karemire issued a statement on Sunday trashing the reports after local tabloid, The Red Pepper carried a story claiming Ugandan troops were on standby ready to support security operations in Kenya.

“UPDF refutes the story in the Sunday Pepper of today 13 August, 2017 alleging that UPDF is on standby to support security operations in Kenya. It is also not true that we deployed after the last election and evacuated,” the statement reads in part.

Below is the full statement

UPDF HAS NOT, AND WILL NOT DEPLOY IN KENYA
UPDF refutes the story in the Sunday Pepper of today 13 August, 2017
alleging that UPDF is on standby to support security operations in
Kenya. It is also not true that we deployed after the last election and evacuated
the Kenyan president to Uganda.
The UPDF wishes to totally denounce these allegations which are totally
false, alarmist and misleading.
There are absolutely no such preparations and no team of officers has
been sent out to Kenya in preparation for such.
The Republic of Kenya is a sovereign country and as such, its security and that of
its people are exclusively within their domain.
The Kenyan people have spoken about their choice of government through
their recently concluded elections.
The Uganda government and indeed the UPDF has neither received such
request on deployment nor is there a situation that warrants it. We however,
reiterate our commitment to work with all our fraternal neighbours within the
existing frameworks such as the East Africa Community(EAC), East African
Standby Force (EASF) etc.
The UPDF takes strong exception to this reckless reporting and will
consider taking appropriate legal measures to stop this wayward and
irresponsible reporting.
Our readers should therefore ignore in entirety the contents in this article that is
not written in good faith.
