Tough Times For Uganda As Kenya Stops Milk Imports Again

Kenya Diary Board has stopped the importation of milk powder “to cushion the industry from surplus production and low producer prices.”

Consequently, the Board wrote to importers on March 6, 2023 that “the Board has temporarily suspended the issuance of the import permits until further notice.”

“We will however continue to monitor the production and demand for milk and milk products in the country and advise the Government accordingly,” the Board’s Managing Director, Margaret Kibogy said.

This is not the first time KDB is suspending milk imports.

In February 2020, Kenya silently stopped milk exports from Uganda from entering its market.

Kenya is one of Uganda’s largest milk market.

In 2020,  Kenya illegally seized Ugandan made milk and milk products under Lato brand, causing heavy financial losses to the company. The milk in question was valued at over Shs1.3bn.
