Top City Reverend Warns Museveni On Age Limit

The Namirembe Cathedral Vicar, Rev. Festo Kalungi has urged President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to change his decision of support on the removal of the presidential age limit from the Constitution.

On Friday, President Museveni while addressing the NRM parliamentary caucus, supported the removal of the presidential age limit provided under Article 102(b) of the constitution, which caps the presidential age at 75.

The President who backed a decision by his cabinet to support Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi’s Constitutional (Amendment) (No.2) Bill, 2017 which seeks to lift the presidential age limit said that Article 102(b) of the constitution was discriminatory.

If Article 102 (b) is amended, it would eliminate the last hurdle for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to seek re-election when his term of office ends in 2021. He is now aged 73, and would not be eligible for another term of office.

While delivering his sermon Sunday afternoon, Rev. Kalungi joined other religious leaders from the Anglican Church who have already come out to speak against the removal of the presidential age limit.

Kalungi noted that President Museveni should rest citing that for the 31 years he has served, he deserves rest and peacefully hand over power. He said that it is time President Museveni prepared a successor rather than listening to self-seekers pushing him to cling onto power.
