The president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, and his rival, Riek Machar, have agreed to delay by 100 days the formation of a government of national unity.
The deadline to set up such an administration was to have been next week, the decision to delay was made following a meeting in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.
The atmosphere was described as “cordial and friendly” in a statement by Ugandan Foreign Minister Sam Kutesa. The meeting was brokered by the leaders of Uganda and Sudan.
On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council said it was concerned that there was no substantive progress on the implementation of key elements of a peace agreement signed last year to end a civil conflict between forces loyal to the two leaders.
It had wanted the unity government to be created immediately.
