State Minister for ICT, Hon. Joyce Ssebugwawo, flanked by the CEO, HiPipo, Innocent Kawooya, hands over the Banking Innovation Excellence Award to PostBank officials for their Digital Wallet Innovation, Wendi, that is utilizing digital infrastructure to advance banking and address the needs of unbanked Ugandan communities.
Hardly 6 months since the revolutionary Fintech and E-Money innovation Wendi was launched and started being used extensively across the country, it has clinched its first major award at the 10th Edition of the HiPipo Digital Impact Awards Africa which have taken place today at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
PostBank’s Wendi Mobile Wallet took home the highly coveted award for Banking Innovation Excellence beating off stiff competition from other big names in the banking industry including Flexi pay by Stanbic Bank, SC Shillingi funds by Standard Chartered and Cente on the Go by Centenary Bank among others.
The Awards’ organisers describe the award for this category as one which honors a brand that exemplifies outstanding utilisation of digital infrastructure to promote advancement in banking and micro finance institutions something PostBank’s Wendi Mobile Wallet has done quite well since its inception.
Speaking about this achievement, the PostBank Head of Mobile Banking, Flavia Nabukeera, was delighted the Wendi Mobile Wallet was able to win this award after a short time in operation.
“I am delighted our latest digital financial innovation Wendi was able to clinch this award comfortably beating off competition from products that have existed much longer in the market. This is a big victory for PostBank and it speaks of the great work and innovation we put into this digital wallet which is leading the way in extending financial services to the unbanked and also creating synergies with other Fintech players including telecoms and banks seamlessly.”
Going forward the bank will continue to improve this excellent digital wallet so that it can be used by customers to acquire loans, shop online and a myriad of other financial services at the convenience of their phones. We shall also keep doors open for other financial players who want to walk the financial inclusion journey together to come on board and partner with us, Nabukeera added.
Representing PostBank Uganda at the awards ceremony, Priscilla Akora, the Head of Marketing and Communications received the award together with Flavia Nabukeera, the Head of Mobile Banking.
Very upbeat about this win, Priscilla Akora added her voice to thanking her colleagues who work tirelessly to ensure the Wendi Mobile Wallet is operating efficiently.

Wendi in its brief time of existence has already onboarded over 350,000 users across the country, 2,400 plus SACCOs and has a capacity to process over 500,000 transactions in a single day.
The Wendi mobile wallet can be downloaded from Google PlayStore or AppStore or can be accessed through USSD code *229#.
Wendi allows users to deposit money, withdraw, save while earning daily interest, transfer funds, pay bills, group funds management, among other benefits after self-registration which requires only a National ID and phone number.
