Paul Bukenya: EC Consulting On Prisoners, Diaspora Participating In Polls

The Electoral Commission (EC) is on a journey to attend to valid concerns, conversations and views about having those in the diaspora as well as prisoners participate in the country’s elections.

“Conversations and views about this matter are important to us as we seek to implement what the court ordered,” EC Spokesperson Paul Bukenya says. “Court ruled that the EC should take necessary measures to ensure that citizens in the Diaspora and those in prisons exercise their right to vote in national elections.”

As a result, the EC says that the Commission has set up a task force involving other agencies to study and consult widely on what needs to be done, administratively and legally, including necessary amendments to electoral laws, “to realise this.”

“The Chairperson is saying the journey has started, and the objective is to have these categories as voters in the coming general elections,” Bukenya adds.

He, however, says that “This effort should be supported by all, including the media.”
