Eight Members of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee have drafted a minority report on the proposed scrapping of the constitutional age limit.
The MPs say they have carefully drafted the minority report to show that majority of Ugandans are opposed to the proposed amendment, adding that the main report doesn’t reflect the will of Ugandans.
Reports emerged last week showing that 18 of the 29 member committee had endorsed the proposal, a significant step towards the removal of the presidential age limit. The Shadow Attorney General, Wilfred Niwagaba, says they have completed signing and preparing the minority report.
Without divulging details of the minority report, Niwagaba says they will be meeting all MPs who agree with their position on the bill.
Muhammad Nsereko, the Kampala Central MP, says amending the constitution might change the fate of Uganda. He says they are working on getting each and every MP’s vote before the second reading of the constitutional amendment bill no 2 of 2017 before parliament.
He says the report they are presenting is the true and justified, adding that they hope MPs can buy into their appeal.
Monica Amoding, the Kumi Woman MP, says Tuesday will be the time to rally MPs across the political divide to stop the proposed amendment, adding that they will not sleep.
