The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Government will not be in position to fulfill its pledge of constructing a least a secondary school in each Sub-County and a primary school in every Parish due to limited funding, the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni has admitted.
The Minister, who also doubles as First Lady made the confession today while addressing journalists at the Office of the Prime Minister while briefing the nation on the progress on the implementation of the manifesto of NRM.
She said the fulfillment of the pledge in the 428 sub counties without a secondary school in the country requires Shs800bn and each sub county requires Shs2bn to set up a complete school which will have a six classroom, ICT laboratory, science laboratory, multipurpose halls plus teacher’s quarters.
The Minister’s statement comes at the back of President Yoweri Museveni’s pledge in which he promised to mobilize Shs137bn to construct secondary schools in 274 sub counties across the country within a space of one year.
Museveni explained that government will use Shs500M to build simple dormitory type classrooms and laboratories in each of the 274 sub counties, which lack a single government secondary school.
NRM boasts of having fulfilled 62% of their manifesto within three years of the current term.
