The Minister for Gender Labour and Social Development, Hon. Amongi Betty Ongom has today conducted spot inspections of various factories to assess the labour related issues faced by workers. The visit started at Rose Foam mattresses factory in Mbalala, along the Mukono-Jinja highway and later extended to Tian Tang industries, Royal Van Zanten Flower Farm and Sunbelt Industries LTD in Namanve. By this evening, the Minister was still locked in a meeting with the management of Sunbelt to find immediate solutions to the reported wanton dismissal of workers and the poor working conditions including the lack of worker’s contracts and appointments, non issuance of worker’s identification cards, harassment, despicable sanitation and the lack of protective gears, among others.
The Minister promised that inspection of workplaces across the country would be stepped up to bring to book employers who operate without respecting labour standards.
The inspections continue tomorrow to cover more factories and the Kampala Flyover project.
