There is a low turn-up at Makerere University as the institution releases students’ transcripts that have been pending for years.
The University opened a two-week window to allow students who had not claimed their transcripts and certificates to do so. The arrangement also saw the University ease the criteria for obtaining academic papers by creating a one-stop centre for the entire process which is taking place at Freedom Square.
However, the turnout remained poor during the first two days of the activity. Only 60 transcripts had been released by Makerere University Business School- MUBS by Wednesday evening and another 30 by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and 22 by the College of Education and External Studies.
The College of Health Sciences has so far issued 20 transcripts while the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-security and the School of law had released only one transcript each.
Tom Otim, the Deputy Academic Registrar in charge of Exams and Transcripts, who is also managing the fair, said that colleges have printed transcripts for students who previously met the criteria but were not able to endure the clearance process. These students merely need to provide their University identification cards to obtain their transcripts.
Otim explained that students who did not complete the clearance form which requires them to clear with the Library and University Bursar will have to clear with the two offices before their transcripts can be processed.
The Registrar of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-security Richard Byarugaba said that, unlike other colleges, many of their students take their transcripts as soon as feasible. He said that the nature of jobs that their students get requires them to have their transcripts on spot, and this forces them to process them before joining the world or work.
By the time the exercise started, Byarugaba said they have only One Hundred (100) transcripts printed, but still, their owners are yet to pick them up.
Hellen Kalema Ssali, the Registrar for the College of Natural Sciences told URN that the college has close to 1000 printed transcripts, but they have only been able to release only five in the two days. But she is optimistic the turn-up will increase with time.
Immaculate Mirembe, a former student who graduated with a Bachelor of Community Psychology in 2015, told URN that she had not bothered picking up her transcript since graduating, but the shortened process pushed her to return.
Another former student from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences who requested anonymity told this reporter that he had cleared with all of the relevant offices and had been asked to return on Thursday to pick up his transcript. He graduated this year.
