Gov’t Urges Farmers To Maintain Quality As Coffee Prices Rebound

Coffee prices are rising again

Coffee prices in Uganda and internationally are experiencing a rebound, particularly for Robusta beans, after a period of decline driven by increased global production and favorable weather conditions.

In the previous two months, coffee prices for Robusta had fallen to as low as Shs9000 for Fair Average Quality (FAQ)/Kasse from an average of Shs13,000.

Kiboko (dry coffee cherries) prices had fallen to about Shs5,000 from an average of Shs7,000.

Frank K. Tumwebaze, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, says as per today’s coffee market report from MAAIF’s Department of Coffee Development, a Kilogram of coffee is selling at between Shs13,000-14,000 (FAQ) and Shs13,500- 14,000 (Arabica parchment) per Kilo.

“This reflects our commitment, confidence in Uganda’s quality coffee by international buyers, and farmers’ resilience,” Tumwebaze said.

International media reports that bullish fundamental factors include a frost event early last week in Brazil, reduced coffee exports from Brazil, and declining coffee ICE warehouse inventories.

In his earlier brief in June 2025, Tumwebaze highlighted the challenges that had led to a decline in coffee prices, particularly global demand and supply imbalances and oversupply from major producers including Brazil, Vietnam, and India.

“At that time, I assured you that the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries was working diligently with all stakeholders to safeguard our coffee sector and stabilize farm-gate prices.

I also indicated that based on our predictions, by mid-August 2025, coffee prices would recover. I am pleased to confirm to you today that this prediction has come true. Coffee prices have indeed rebounded to the expected levels,” he said.

Maintain Quality

As Uganda embraces this positive development, Tumwebaze has called upon all farmers and actors in the coffee value chain to continue focusing on maintaining high quality standards at harvesting, drying and processing to safeguard Uganda’s reputation as a producer of premium coffee; adopting good agricultural practices to increase productivity and quality; strengthening farmer organizations and cooperatives to enhance bargaining power; and exploring value addition opportunities to reduce vulnerability to international price fluctuations.

“The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries remains committed to protecting the interests of coffee farmers and ensuring that Uganda’s coffee sector continues to thrive as a cornerstone of our economy and a source of livelihood for millions of households,” Tumwebaze said, adding urging all stakeholders to maintain the momentum and most importantly to continue adhering to correct practices in production, harvesting and post-harvest.
