Friday Night Fire Destroys Jinja Shops

Businessmen and women are counting loses, following the Friday night fire which gutted eight shops along main Street in Southern division, in Jinja city.

The affected shops were dealing in majorly stationary, sports wears, clothing, crafts and shoes.

It is estimated that items worth 200 Mllion Shillings were destroyed in the fire.

Fatia Nakigudde, a crafts shop attendant says that, most of her items were destroyed.

“The fire gutted the affected shops at around 10:00PM and there was timely response from police however, the fire was so big flames which deterred us from rescuing our property,” she says.

Juma Musisi, a sports shop operator says that they suspect the fire to have resulted from loose electricity power connections.

Kiira region’s police spokesperson, James Mubi says that they have not yet established the real cause of the fire and they are liaising with the victims to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the fire.

Mubi adds that police personnel attached to the fire and rescue services unit have been deployed at the scene, with an aim of intensifying inquiries into the possible leads that might have sparked off the fire.
