Evelyn Anite: Slash Salaries Of MPs, Ministers

Minister Evelyn Anite

The Minister in Charge of Investment in the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development has described it as obscene.

Anite, the former Member of Parliament for Koboko, wants the salaries reviewed and slashed.

She was speaking on X Spaces on Monday evening while addressing the issue of corruption and her fast acquisition of wealth. Anite is 39 years old and was in Parliament between 2011 and 2021.

But according to Anite, her first pay left her knees trembling. It was Shs 28 million. At the time, she was 24 years old, fresh from Uganda Christian University (UCU), and was working with the Uganda Media Centre. At the media center, she earned Shs 500, 000.

“My kness trembled. I called my husband and said, What is this?” From earning Shs 500, 000 to Shs 28 million,” said Anite.

Anite says it was from then that she started investing her money. Today, Anite owns a hotel and a local factory in the region, making soap, among others. This, after earning more than Shs 28 million for the last 14 years. She says that salaries for MPs who earned that amount of money since 2011 have gone to about Shs 40 million.

She now wants the salaries for MPs and ministers revised and cut.

Anite argues that huge pay is the reason people are dying to go to Parliament, not representation.

“If you want leaders, cut the pay of MPs and ministers,” said Anite.

On fighting corruption, Anite says she will continue talking.
