Ethiopia’s national airline has said a consignment of arms recently delivered to Sudan was legal.
The airline was reacting to a Sudan News Agency (Suna) saying that the authorities in Khartoum had launched an investigation into the arrival of 72 boxes of weapons flown in by Ethiopian Airlines.
The boxes reportedly included automatic rifles and night-vision goggles.
In a statement, the airline said that the equipment was intended for hunting:
“We have all the documentation to prove the legality of the shipment including a letter from the Sudanese Foreign Ministry.”
Suna quoted a member of a government committee saying the weapons were sneaked out of the airport before the authorities were informed.
