Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama (L) receives a T-Shirt from Equal Opportunities Commission’s Sylvia Muwebwa Ntambi
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has this morning met with the Independent Electoral Commission to discuss inclusive participation of persons with visual impairment in the country’s electoral processes. This comes as the country gears up for the 2021 general elections.
According to the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Sylvia Muwebwa Ntambi, “It is important to note that our legal promotion, protection and fulfillment of civic and voter rights does not discriminate against any Ugandan”.
The Equal Opportunities Commission proposed the use of the tactile voting jacket whose use they say will be easy for not only people with visual impairment, but even those with very low or no formal education and older persons.
“A number of African countries have embraced this approach and made it pretty easy for their citizens with visual impairment to vote” Muwebwa said.
Justice Simon Byabakama the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission commended the EOC for the proposal and promised Ugandans with visual impairments that the idea will be considered.
