How dfcu Bank Is Driving Social Change Through Strategic Partnerships In Health & Education

dfcu has been a pillar of Uganda’s financial landscape for the past 60 years, helping individuals and businesses thrive. However, beyond financial services, the bank has built a solid reputation for its dedication to creating lasting social impact through strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Two recent partnerships—the Jinja Rotary Cancer Run and the Makerere University Run—demonstrate how dfcu is making a tangible difference in health and education access for Ugandans.

Making a stand for health with the Jinja Rotary Cancer Run

In August, dfcu Bank played a key role in the Jinja Rotary Cancer Run, an event aimed at raising funds for the construction of a cancer center in Nsambya, Kampala. This center will serve not just Uganda but also provide crucial cancer care services for the wider East African region. For dfcu, participating in this cause was more than a business decision—it was a reflection of the bank’s commitment to community well-being.

“We believe that health is wealth. We cannot serve a sick community,” said Kenneth Nuwamanya, Jinja Branch Manager dfcu Bank. This simple yet powerful statement captures the essence of why the bank supports health-related initiatives. The Jinja Rotary Cancer Run gave dfcu Bank an opportunity to contribute to a cause that addresses the growing concern of cancer in the region. By donating running kits and drinking water, and facilitating the event, the bank reaffirmed its belief in the shared value. The event was a success, and dfcu’s involvement resonated with both participants and the larger community.

“We received tremendous feedback from the participants, many of whom appreciated the bank’s commitment to the cause,” noted Kenneth Nuwamanya. This initiative fostered a sense of community, inspiring others to act in similarly beneficial ways for health causes.

Empowering inclusive education through the Makerere University Run

dfcu Bank’s involvement in the Makerere University Run highlighted its commitment to a different but equally key area of education. The 2024 edition of the run focused on raising funds to construct a student center tailored for learners with disabilities at Makerere University. In this initiative, dfcu saw an opportunity to have influence in both accessibility and inclusivity for students with special needs.

“Our purpose is to transform lives and businesses, and sponsoring the MakRun aligns perfectly with that mission,” shared Bryan Katamba, Education and Health Sector Head at dfcu Bank. The funds raised will go toward building a much-needed student center that will offer accessible facilities for students with disabilities, a vital step in ensuring that every learner at Makerere can achieve their full potential.

dfcu Bank’s CSR initiatives stand out because of the comprehensive approach the bank takes in addressing the needs of the community.

Looking ahead, dfcu Bank remains committed to deepening its social impact through similar partnerships. dfcu Bank will continue to leverage its resources and influence to foster development in Uganda. As the bank’s Jinja Branch Manager noted, “We believe in shared value. When we support health and education initiatives, we are not just giving back—we are investing in the future of the communities we serve.”

With a strong commitment to health and education, dfcu Bank is proving that financial institutions can play a pivotal role in societal development. By championing causes that improve the lives of the most vulnerable, dfcu Bank is living up to its promise of transforming lives and businesses across Uganda. Through initiatives like the Rotary Cancer Run and the Makerere University Run, the bank is building a legacy of lasting social impact—one partnership at a time.
