Top African Countries Buying Uganda Coffee Revealed

African countries are increasingly importing Uganda coffee

Uganda is Africa’s leading coffee exporter. It’s also the second leading coffee producer in Africa after Ethiopia. Uganda Coffee Development Authority’s monthly reports indicate that over 60% of Uganda’s coffee exports go to Europe and the rest is shared by Africa, Asia and South America.

African countries import over 10% of Uganda’s coffee exports per month.

The UCDA monthly report for December 2023 shows that Uganda’s coffee exports to Africa amounted to 56,253-60kg bags, representing a market share of 14% compared to 69,2882 bags (16%) the previous month.

Uganda’s coffee exports in December 2023 amounted to 401,336 60-kilo bags, worth US$ 65.94 million. This comprised 337,026 bags of Robusta valued at US$ 52.84 million and 64,310 bags of Arabica valued at US$ 13.10 million. This was a decrease of 4.17% in quantity and an increase of 10.76% in value compared to the same month last year.

By comparing quantity of coffee exported by type in the same month of last Coffee Year (December 2022), Robusta increased by 1.68% and 30.32 in quantity and value respectively, while Arabica exports decreased by 26.38% and 31.02% in quantity and value respectively.

African countries that usually import Uganda coffee include Sudan, Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya.

In December 2023, Morocco was the leading African importer of Uganda coffee after it imported 24,544 bags (23,264 of Robusta and 1,280 of Arabica). This represents 6.12% of Uganda’s total coffee exports in December 2023. Globally, Morocco was the 4th leading importer of Uganda coffee in December. In Africa, it was followed by Sudan after the country imported 20,318 bags of Robusta, representing 5.06%. Algeria took the 3rd position after it imported 7,298 bags of Robusta coffee, representing 1.82%.

It was followed by Egypt after it imported 684 bags (350 of Robusta and 334 of Arabica ), representing 0.17%, while Kenya imported  606 bags of Arabica, representing 0.15%. In December, South Africa imported 320 bags of Arabica, representing 0.08%. It’s understood most of the African Muslim countries that buy Uganda coffee resell it mainly to Arab countries in the Middle East.

In total, 33 countries from across the world imported Uganda coffee in December.

Italy maintained the highest market share with 39.45% compared to 27.68% last month. It was followed by India 12.05% (7.59%), Germany 11.47% (20.50%), Morocco 6.12% (2.86%) and Spain 5.96% (5.53%).

The first 10 major destinations of Uganda coffee took a market share of 92.25% compared to 86.72% in November.

Europe remained the main destination for Uganda’s coffees with a 67% imports share, slightly lower than 68% in November 2023.

A number of countries import and consume Uganda coffee because of its rich aroma and less use of synthetic products.

Uganda is ranked 3rd globally in producing good quality coffee.
