El Nino: Experts Warn Of Enhanced Rainfall Over The Next Months

The Office of the Prime Minister has warned of a likelihood of above normal (enhanced) rainfall over several parts of the country.

In a statement Wednesday, the OPM said the El Nino was also indicated to influence climate conditions during the period of September to December 2023.

In Uganda, El Nino is associated with heavy or enhanced rainfall.

“Aware that Uganda has a high risk weather-related hazards and associated disasters, and given the El Nino alert from UNMA, its envisaged that there is a potential to experience disruptions of social and economic activities, and loss of livelihoods in most parts of the country,” reads part of the statement.

The OPM appealed to local governments, committees and the general public to adhere to “this early warning alert, and also advise the District Disaster Management Committees and stakeholders to update and activate the multi-hazard district contingency plans, conduct community sensitization, and preposition stock for emergency in areas proximity to communities at high risk for timely response, among other interventions.

The OPM also tasked the communities to embark on clean-up activities, stock food to off set shortages during peak rainy periods and avoid crossing flooded or waterlogged sections.
