A team of joint security personnel from both UPDF and Police, on Saturday gunned down, Private Rodgers Alibuza, an army deserter whom they accused of stealing two guns from Gaddafi barracks and killing Sgt Peter Eyagu on 17th November, 2022.
They also recovered the two guns but not before the assailanbt had shot and injured three more UPDF soldiers in the arrest process.
The dead killers’s body has been taken to Iganga general hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem.
The two recovered gunsare the standat army issue of AK 47, with serial numbers No. UG UPDF 56595903627 and No. UG UPDF 4814241.
Alibuza whose force number is RA/225972, was surrounded at his rented house in Nkaatu cell in the Northern division of Iganga.
The security personnel instructed him to open up his door and voluntarily surrender, but he instead declined and instead opened fire on them.
Alibuza shot and injured Pte Medard Omadi, Pte Erisa Kule and Pte Julius Mulongo, who are currently receiving medical attention at Iganga general hospital surgical ward.
Alibuza later jumped over the wall fence and briefly fled to a neighbouring sugarcane plantation, where security personnel further trailed him.
Pte Isaac Tumusiime who was leading the joint forces operations command, shot and injured Alibuza, who instead of surrendering, fled off in a sugarcane plantation where he bled to death.
The Busoga East police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula confirms the incident, adding that, detectives alongside scene of crime officers have cordoned off the scene and interrogated neighbouring residents.
Nandawula adds that exhibits including an army pouch containing three magazines loaded with 88 rounds of live ammunition, new army trouser, fourteen cartridges and another empty magazine were recovered from Alibuza’s house.
Ezra Gabula, the Iganga L.C.V chairperson says that several deserters are taking refuge in the different developing towns in the area and he urged responsible agencies to conduct comprehensive audits to avoid such scenarios.
