1,537 families in Lango and Acholi sub-regions have received customary land titles. The titles were handed over to the beneficiaries by President Museveni on Thursday in Apac District.
The beneficiaries are drawn from Chegere and Ibuje sub-counties in Apac district and four other sub-counties in the districts of Agago and Maracha where the pilot project has been implemented.
This is part of the interventions in the land sector aimed at ensuring the security of land rights supported by the European Union-EU.
Nelson Beja, a beneficiary believes that with the certificates, land conflicts and land grabbing will not be a problem, saying it is a form of protection given by the government to the local people.
Mikolina Agweng, another beneficiary who received a certificate for her 21 acres of land is excited that her land is now safe from land grabbers.
President Museveni advised the people of Lango to distribute land to their children rather than fragmenting it.
He said that the government will conduct free land surveys for all Ugandans in the near future to ensure that everyone with customary land gets a certificate.
Asante Odongo, the Apac LCV Chairperson believes that the issuance of certificates will solve all land-related problems argues. He requested that the project be enrolled in the other sub-counties of Apac District.
Caroline Adriaensen, the Head of Cooperation -European Union (EU) said that the EU will continue supporting the government to ensure that the project is rolled out across Northern and Eastern Uganda. She said that a modern land administration system that is based on comprehensive, reliable, and accurate information contributes to land tenure security.
