Traders dealing in the sale of animals for ‘Eid al Adha celebrations have decried the low turn up of Moslems who buy sacrificial animals due to the high prices of animals.
Eid al Adha is one of Islam’s main festivals when Muslims slaughter animals and give meat to the needy to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son on God’s command.
Several people say that higher prices blamed of fuel prices mean they can’t afford the important tradition.
Shamshidin Lukima one of the traders selling goats at Kimeeme Livestock Traders in Kisenyi said that several people have learned how to rear their animals to slaughter, leading low buyers in the market.
Lukima said that goat prices range from 120,000 Shillings to shillings 500,000, depending on the weight. He also said that there has not been any increment in the prices only that there is a low turn up of buyers in the market.
Joweria Nasejje, a goats trader for over 10 years said that the business used to be profitable then but this Eid they have not made many profits because there are few customers.
Ssalongo Sulaiman Ssekanyo the chairman of Nsooba slaughterhouse limited at Kalerwe also said that the cows have cost between 1 million to 2.5 million shillings but they have not also made much money as the buyers preferred to slaughter goats to cows this Eid due to financial constraints.
Muslims across the world sacrifice an animal in recognition of the prophet Ibrahim’s own willingness to sacrifice his son for the will of Allah.
They demonstrate their obedience to Allah by sacrificing an animal. Eid al- Adha is inspired by a story from the Quran that is also known to Christians.
