Absa Bank Uganda Gives Team Uganda Shs54.5m For 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games

Absa Bank Uganda has sponsored the team that will represent Uganda at the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics to the tune of UGX 54.5m.

The sponsorship will go towards medical care, health insurance and training kits for the team of 22 that comprises boxers, athletes, swimmers among other sports disciplines.

Speaking at a press conference hosted by the Uganda Olympic Committee, Helen Basuuta Nangonzi, Absa Bank Uganda’s Marketing and Customer Experience Director said, “I would like to congratulate the team for making Uganda proud by qualifying for the Olympic Games, which is an outstanding achievement.”  

The press conference was hosted by the Ugandan Olympic Committee as the 100-day countdown to the games begins today.

This year’s summer Olympics will take place between 23rd July and 8th August, after being postponed from 2020 over the COVID-19 pandemic. In another historical occurrence, Uganda will for the first time in history send a team comprising of more women than men, with 12 women out of 22.  

In her closing remarks, Nangonzi said: “We are proud to have this opportunity to support the growth of Ugandan talent. The involvement of the Absa brand in sports is long-standing both at a national level and on the African continent. We believe in the value of sports as an avenue to bring people together but also as a strong passion point for us as Africans.”
